Bon Jovi es una banda formada en 1983 por Jon Bon Jovi (John Francis Bongiovi) compositor,voz,guitarra acústica, eléctrica, armónica y pandero, Richie Sambora en los coros y la guitarra, David Bryan en los coros y teclados, Tico Torres (Hector Torres) en la batería y Alec John Such como bajista. Sustituido no oficialmente en 1995 por Hugh McDonald.
Adquirieron gran popularidad en las décadas de los 80 y 90.
Los problemas en las posteriores giras debidos a la tensión y al desgaste físico ocasionaron que la banda hiciera un paréntesis. Su inactividad a finales de 1989 y principios de los 90's llevó a pensar en la disolución de la banda. Dicha idea se vio alimentada cuando en 1990 Jon Bon Jovi, en calidad de solista, editó su segundo álbum, Blaze of Glory, que constituyó la banda sonora de la película Arma Joven II. El director de dicho film había solicitado a Jon que presentara "Wanted Dead or Alive", éxito de Slippery When Wet, como su respectivo soundtrack. Pero Jon, por su parte, tuvo una idea mejor: hizo un nuevo álbum con una temática del Oeste llamado Blaze of Glory.
Su primer single Blaze of Glory sería como la segunda parte de Wanted Dead or Alive y fue postulado al Oscar en la categoría de "Mejor Canción de Película" y ganó un Globo de Oro como "Canción del Año". Otros éxitos del álbum fueron Billy Get your Guns, Dying Ain't Much of a Living y Miracle.
Mientras tanto Richie quiso probar como solista editando su primer álbum fuera de Bon Jovi, Stranger in this Town, el cual tuvo una acogida moderada.
Fue en el año 1992 cuando se reintegraron y lanzaron un álbum ''Keep the faith'' en el que cambiaron musicalmente lo que provocó muchas críticas.
Pero arrasan con una venta de 10 millones de copias.
En 1994 publican el recopilarorio Crossroad ''14 classic grooves'' con dos nuevos temas ''Always'' y ''Someday I'II be saturday Night'' con los que arrasaron nuevamente.
En el año de 1995 lanzaron al mercado el álbum These Days que contiene temas más oscuros y profundos que sus anteriores producciones, sobre todo las canciones "Hey God" y "Something To Believe In" que dieron mucho que hablar por el contenido de la letra.
Tras un periodo de separación en el año 2000 lanzaron el esperado Crush, álbum que significó la reaparición de la banda, grabado en el estudio de Jon Bon Jovi y que fue uno de los discos más vendidos y escuchados de ese año.
El álbum vendió más de 13 millones de copias a nivel mundial y ganó doble platino en Estados Unidos.
En el 2002, lanzaron el disco Bounce, inspirado en las tragedias del 11 de Septiembre, que vendió aproximadamente 8 millones de copias.
En el 2003 sale a la venta This Left Feels Right, una antología de sus mejores éxitos pero con un estilo totalmente diferente y, además, en un formato casi acústico.
En Septiembre del 2005 sale ''Have a nice day'', un disco que mantiene la frescura y el sonido de siempre pero que se dirige a un campo más amplio de público, se venden más de 9 millones de copias en todo el mundo.
A fecha de hoy Bon Jovi ha vendido más de 125 millones de discos en todo el mundo, excluyendo los singles .
El 14 de noviembre del 2006 se realizó la tercera ceremonia del UK Hall of fame donde la banda junto a Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, James Brown y Brian Wilson pasa a formar parte de las leyendas de la música al entrar en el Salón de la fama. Se convierte en la banda más joven en formar parte de este selecto grupo.
Días después Bon Jovi fue nominado al GRAMMY 2007 por el Dueto Country: Who says you cant go home? con Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland), galardón que se llevaron, lo que transforma a Bon Jovi en la primera banda de Rock en ganar premios en esa categoría y permanecer primero en los rankings Country.
En junio del 2007 se lanzó su álbum Lost Highway en el que se intento plasmar en las canciones los duros momentos personales que atravesaron algunos miembros del grupo en los ultimos meses, como la muerte del padre de Richie Sambora (por un cáncer de pulmón) o el doloroso divorcio de David Bryan.
Con este álbum han llegado al puesto No.1 en álbums, lo cual es un hecho histórico para la banda, ya que desde 1988 con New Jersey, no había tenido otro No.1 en lanzamientos; tardando así 18 años en repetir la hazaña.
